AKIN DRUM
This is one of my favorite songs because it is funny and different every time
you sing it. I first heard it from a banjo player in Pipestem, West Virginia at
the South Appalachian Folklife Festival. He taught it to me as a “play party”
song - which means a song used to entertain the kids while grown-ups got some
time to themselves!
In other versions that I have heard, a second chorus is added : “He played
upon his ladle, ladle, ladle, played upon his ladle and his name was Akin
Drum....”
There was a man comes from the moon, from the moon, from the moon
There was a man comes from the moon, and his name was Akin Drum
His head was made of pizza, pizza, pizza
His head was made of pizza, and his name was Akin Drum
His neck were made of string beans, string beans, string beans
His neck were made of string beans, and his name was Akin Drum
His belly was made of jello, jello, jello
His belly was made of jello, and his name was Akin Drum
His legs was made of french fries, french fries, french fries
His legs was made of french fries, and his name was Akin Drum
His feet were made of broccoli, broccoli, broccoli
His feet were made of broccoli, and his name was Akin Drum
Oh what a crazy creature, creature, creature
Oh what a crazy creature, that dear old Akin Drum
ANGELS WATCHING OVER ME
All Day, All Night,
Angels watching over me, my Lord
All Day, All Night,
Angels watching over me
Now I lay me down to sleep
Angels Watching over me, my Lord
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Angels watching over me
Angels watching all through the night
Angels watching over me, my Lord
Keep me safe ‘til the morning light
Angels watching over me

BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW WORLD
Words and music by Daria A. Marmaluk-Hajioannou
One morning I woke up with this song in my head and I
loved what it had to say!
It’s amazing what can happen to us when we
dream!
Today I woke up to see A beautiful rainbow world
Won’t you dream it along with me?
A beautiful rainbow world
Beautiful rainbow, beautiful rainbow
Beautiful rainbow world
Beautiful rainbow, beautiful rainbow
Beautiful rainbow world
Red, black, yellow, brown and white
A beautiful rainbow world
Dancing together in the light
A beautiful rainbow world
No one lost or left behind
Beautiful rainbow world
Each one their own treasure finds
Beautiful rainbow world

CHILD OF GOD
Words and music – traditional, African-American
Additional new verse by Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou
I heard this song at my daughter’s school and added a new verse about peace.
If anybody asks you who I am, who I am, who I am
If anybody asks you who I am
Tell them I’m a child of God
Mary rocked the cradle, peace on earth, peace on earth, peace on earth
Mary rocked the cradle, peace on earth
For every little child of God
I’m walking and I’m talking now for peace on earth, peace on earth, peace on
earth
I’m walking and I’m talking now for peace on earth
For every little child of God
If anybody asks you who I am, who I am, who I am
If anybody asks you who I am
Tell them I’m a child of God

DO THE LIMBO
Music – traditional, new lyrics by Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou
Do the limbo – go a little lower each time
Do the limbo, we’re singing and we’re dancing in rhyme
We limbo fast, we limbo slow
Look out now, here we go (2x)
We limbo left, we limbo right
Look out now, we’re out of sight! (2x)
We limbo all around the room
We limbo under the limbo broom (2x)
Last time…
We do the limbo – to the bottom from the top
We do the limbo – We do the limbo til we stop – cha, cha, cha!

FOR ALL THE WORLD’S CHILDREN
© 1997 D.A. Marmaluk-Hajioannou
This is my wish and my hope for all children - and all people, too!
For all the world’s children
Here’s a song and a prayer
That you’ll reach out for love
And it will always be there
That you’ll rise like the wind
And glow like the stars
And always remember
How special you are
That you’ll always find friendship
And folks who are kind
Who can share your joy with you
And sharpen your mind
And that home will be a place
From which the best journeys start
And that you’ll soar in your lifetime
On wings of the heart
For all the world’s children
I wish justice and peace
And a world that respects you
And your dignity
So you can rise like the moon
And shine your light far...
And always remember
How special you are

HERE COME OUR MOTHERS
Words and music, Traditional – Zulu
Mothers everywhere always find little ways to make each day special for their
kids! This is a Zulu song from South Africa learned from the wonderful group,
Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It tells of the time of year when the mothers sell
their extra foods at the market and always bring something wonderful home for
their children.
Here come our mothers, bringing us presents

I HAVE A DREAM
Words and music by Daria A. Marmaluk-Hajioannou
Dr. Martin Luther King had such a wonderful vision for a new world - A world
of respect and dignity for all people. If we share these ideas – we can truly
all be “kings”.
There’s a man I think you’ve heard of
His name is Martin Luther King
He wanted a world of peace and love
He said “I have a dream”
I have a dream
I have a dream
I’ve been to the mountaintop and I’ve seen...
I have a dream
I know that this is possible
I know that this can be
If each one can learn to live with love
Then we can all be free
If you share this vision
You know it’s not a difficult thing
We can build a world of peace and love
And we can all be queens and “kings”
J
JADDA
Jadda, jadda, jadda jadda jing, jing jing
Jadda, jadda, jadda jadda jing, jing jing
It’s a funny bit of melody
That’s so soothing and appealing to me
It goes “Jadda, jadda, jadda jadda jing, jing jing”

LA BAMBA
I’m told this song was a
traditional party song from Mexico before it was recorded by Richie Valens. The
chorus would always stay the same and funny or clever verses would be improvised
or added. I’m not sure if that story is accurate but the song sure is fun!
Para bailar la bamba
Para bailar la bamba, se necesita una poca de gracia
Una poca de gracia, por ti sere
por ti sere
Baile la bamba, baile la bamba
Yo no soy marinero (I am not a sailor)
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan (I’m the captain!)
Soy capitan, soy capitan
Baile la bamba, baile la bamba
LA CUCARACHA
Words and music, Traditional – Latin
American
New English verses by Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou
A very silly song. I’ve added
some English verses here as well.
What’s a… what’s a… what’s a
cucaracha ?
It’s a … It’s a … cockroach
€What’s a… what’s a… what’s a cucaracha ?
It’s a … It’s a … cockroach
La cucaracha, La cucaracha, ya no puede caminar
Porque le falte, porque no tiene
Dinero para gastar
The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
I saw him just the other day
I like him best when, he takes his things and
He gets his friends and moves away!
The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
He likes to play up with the band
Upon the guiro, he is a hero
He’s got the fastest moving hands
La cucaracha, La cucaracha, ya no puede caminar
Porque le falte, porque no tiene
Dinero para gastar
The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
He likes to play up with the band
Upon the guiro, he is a hero
He’s got the fastest moving hands
The little cockroach, the little cockroach,
I saw him just the other day
I like him best when, he takes his things and
He gets his friends and moves away - ole!

MAGDALENA, HAGDALENA
This is a crazy song that I play
on the spoons. I learned it from my sister-in-law who remembers it from her Girl
Scout days.
Magdalena, Hagdalena Uka Taka
Waka Taka
Oka Mocha Polka was her name
She had seven hairs on the top of her head
Four were alive and the rest were dead
She had two eyes in the middle of her head
One was green and the other was red
She had two teeth in the middle of her mouth
One pointing north and the other pointing south
She had two teeth like a bathroom mat
Everybody asked how they got like that
And one day - a ten ton truck - hit poor Magdalena
The poor truck driver had to buy a new machine

RIDE HORSE, RIDE
Words and music by Daria A.
Marmaluk-Hajioannou and Kyra Joy Hajioannou
Native people believe in both respecting
animals and learning lessons about life from them. My daughter and I wrote this
song with our Pueblo drum about horses.
Ride, horse, ride
Ride into the sunbeams
Ride, horse, ride
Ride into the moonbeams
Take us to where we need to go
Show us what we need to know…
Ride, horse, ride
Ride into the sunbeams
Ride, horse, ride
Ride into the moonbeams
Take us to where we need to go
Show us what we need to know…

SALAAM, SHALOM
Words and music by Daria
Marmaluk-Hajioannou
Salaam, Shalom - Salaam, Shalom
These words mean peace, these words bring hope
Brothers raise your voice with mine
Sisters bring your song
If the people show the way
Then the leaders must come along (singing)
Salaam, Shalom - Saalam, Shalom
These words mean peace, these words bring hope
Everywhere we pray for peace
We work for a new start
For miracles to light the way
Giving wings to broken hearts
Salaam, Shalom - Saalam, Shalom
These words mean peace, these words bring hope
The time for mourning now is past
The time for peace is come
The night it was so long and dark
Let’s welcome a new dawn
Salaam, Shalom - Salaam, Shalom
These words mean peace, these words bring hope
SHE’LL BE COMING FROM HER CONDO
I always loved the song “She’ll be Coming Round
The Mountain”. Today’s grandmother, however, rarely rides white horses or brings
chicken and dumplings. So I thought I’d update the song, just a little bit. Feel
free to make up your own verses...
She'll be coming from her condo when she
comes...
She'll be coming from her condo when she comes...
She'll be coming from her condo
She’ll be driving in her honda
She'll be coming to our condo when she comes...
She will drive her Chevy Blazer when she comes (beep, beep)
She will drive her Chevy Blazer when she comes (beep, beep)
She will drive a Chevy Blazer
Or a Dodge Daytona Laser
She will drive her Chevy Blazer when she comes
She'll bring Little Caesar’s Pizza when she comes (mm, good!)
She'll bring Little Caesar’s Pizza when she comes (mm, good!)
She will bring us Little Caesar’s
The super cheeser pleaser
She'll bring Little Caesar’s Pizza when she comes
We will go to Zany Brainy when she comes (real cool!)
We will go to Zany Brainy when she comes (real cool!)
We will go to Zany Brainy
When it’s sunny and it’s rainy
We will go to Zany Brainy when she comes (real cool!)
We'll eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream when she comes (yum, yum)
We'll eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream when she comes (yum, yum)
We'll eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream
For it is such a nice cream
We'll eat Ben and Jerry's ice cream when she comes
She'll be coming from her condo when she comes...
She'll be coming from her condo when she comes...
She'll be coming from her condo
She’ll be driving in her honda
She'll be coming to our condo when she comes...

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
One of my heroes growing up was Woody Guthrie
because he traveled from place to place
singing and sharing music. He has so
many great songs - but I included this one because it has a special place in the
heart of our culture.
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California to the New York Island
From the Redwood forest to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me!
As I was walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me!
I’ve roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
To the sparkling edges of her diamond desserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me!
Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking that freedom highway
Nobody living can make me turn back
This land was made for you and me!
THREE LITTLE FISHIES
Down in a meadow in an itty bitty pool
Swam three little fishies and the mamma fishie, too
Swim said the momma fishie, swim if you can
And they swam and they swam all over the dam
Chorus: Boop, boop diddum daddum waddum chew!
And they swam and they swam all over the dam
Stop! Said the mommy or you will get lost
But the three little fishies didn’t want to get bossed
So they swam and they swam as you can see
And they swam and they swam right into the sea
Help! Cried the little fishies look at the whales
Quick as they could, they turned on their tales
Back to the pool in the meadow they swam
And they swam and they swam all over the dam
TUMBALAIKA
Traditional – Yiddish
Chorus:
Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika,
Tumbala, tumbala, tumbalalaika
tumbalalaika, shpiel balalaika
tumbalalaika - freylach zol zayn.
Shteyt a bocher, shteyt un tracht,
tracht un tracht a gantze nacht.
Vemen tsu nemen un nit far shemen,
vemen tsu nemen un nit far shemen
Hear my tale of a certain young man
Stayed up all night til he thought up a plan
Wanted a girl who would be his delight
One who was pretty, witty and bright
The girl was pretty – and clever, you see
Anwered his questions, one, two and three
Answered his questions, then asked him one more…
“Sir, will you dance out on the dance floor?”

WE’VE GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN OUR HANDS
New Lyrics © 1996 D.A.
Marmaluk-Hajioannou
To love and care for the earth means that we
will be able to enjoy it for generations. This song is about making peaceful and
“earth friendly” choices now to insure a brighter future for all humankind in
the years to come.
We’ve got the whole world, in our hands
We’ve got the whole world, in our hands
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
We should recycle now - all that we can
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - all that we can
We should recycle now - all that we can
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
Be kind to the plants and animals - of our land
Be kind to the plants and animals - of our land
Be kind to the plants and animals - of our land
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
Join hands with sisters and brothers - throughout the land
Join hands with sisters and brothers - throughout the land
Join hands with sisters and brothers - throughout the land
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
Dream your bright dream - then do all that you can
Dream your bright dream - then do all that you can
Dream your bright dream - then do all that you can
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
We’ve got the whole world, in our hands
We’ve got the whole world, in our hands
We’ve got the whole world, in our hands
We’ve got the whole world in our hands
WHOLE NEW WORLD
Words and music by Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou
Once there was a little seed
Trapped beneath the ground
Couldn’t see a single thing
couldn’t hear a sound
But something deep inside of it
Reached up toward the light
Knew there would be something good
Something real and right…
A whole new world
a whole new day
take my hand
We’ll live a brighter way
Then right next to this little seed
There came up lots of sprouts
Green and growing everywhere
To let the wonder out
What once had looked like empty soil
Became a field of dreams
If you’ve ever watched how love transforms
Then you’ll know what I mean
A whole new world
a whole new day
take my hand
We’ll live a brighter way
So this is what I’m telling you
Is happening today
Hands are reaching upward now
To welcome whole new ways
Joy and peace can blossom
Where there was sorrow and despair
The fields are getting greener now
I think we’re almost there
A whole new world
a whole new day
take my hand
We’ll live a brighter way
WILD AND FREE
Words by Daria A. Marmaluk-Hajioannou
This song is written to the tune of “My
Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean”. I’ve added new words about some of my favorite
water creatures.
The dolphins they play in the ocean
The dolphins they play by the sea
The dolphins they play in the ocean
Oh let them be wild and be free
Wild and free
Oh let them be wild and be free (be free...)
Wild and free
Oh let them be wild and be free
The whales, they swim in the ocean
Deep in the depths of the sea
The whales they swim in the ocean
Oh let them be wild and be free
The manatees play by the bayside
The manatees play by the sea
Sometimes they’ll even swim with us…
But let them be wild and free….
Oh don’t you love all the creatures
The ones from the land and the seas?
If we protect the they'll be with us forever
Wonderful, wild and free !
